Configure Your Cross

A ceremonial cross in hand-applied gold leaf with a red heart at the center — a symbol that carries across the Western Mystery Tradition, from the Rosy Cross of the Rosicrucian and Golden Dawn currents to the Sacred Heart of Christian mysticism and the cor ardens of Martinist symbolism. The form is the same across traditions; the meaning is read from where it is placed.

The cross is built on a solid wood substrate and finished entirely by hand. Gold leaf catches light in a way painted or printed surfaces cannot — with depth, warmth, and the small variations in surface that mark work made by a person rather than a machine.

Materials & Construction

The substrate is a solid wood cross cut to an eight-by-five-and-a-half-inch trefoil (botonée) form — the traditional ecclesiastical cross with trilobed arm ends, used continuously in Christian and Christianized esoteric iconography for centuries. The wood is sealed and prepared so the gilding sits cleanly.

Gold leaf is applied sheet by sheet by hand. Each sheet is laid into the size, pressed, and finished so the surface reads as a unified field of leaf rather than a printed gold surface. The faux variant uses a brass-alloy leaf with a warm gold cast; the 24k variant uses authentic 24-karat gold leaf. Both finishes are applied with the same technique. The difference is the metal.

The red heart at the center is set with cut faceted rhinestones on the rhinestone variants, or rendered as a painted red field on the non-rhinestone variants. The rhinestones are densely packed so they catch and scatter candlelight from any angle.

Versions

Faux Gold Leaf — $85. Bold presentation at an accessible price. Warm gold finish with strong reflectivity. The right answer when the piece will be displayed at distance, when several are needed, or as an entry point to the form.

Faux Gold + Rhinestones — $110. Faux gilding with the rhinestone heart at the center.

24k Gold Leaf — $165. Authentic 24-karat gold, hand-applied sheet by sheet. The depth and warmth real gold returns under candlelight cannot be matched by faux. The choice for altar work and sustained ceremonial use.

24k Gold + Rhinestones — $195. The full piece — 24k gilding with the rhinestone heart at the center.

Use

Sized for altar display, lodge installation, wall hanging, and personal devotional work. Eight inches is large enough to anchor an altar without crowding it and small enough to travel between working spaces. The form does not signal a single tradition; it can be set into Rosicrucian, Martinist, Christian, or independent practice without alteration.

Care

Display away from direct moisture and prolonged sunlight. Dust with a soft, dry brush — never a damp cloth on the gilded face. With reasonable care, gold-leafed surfaces hold their finish for decades.
